Songs of the Summer
According to the Billboard Music Charts, the idea of "the hit of the summer" was a song that perfectly encapsulated the feeling of that particular summer. If you go to their website, they have the top ten songs of summer dating back to the summer of 1958. Hearing that song takes you back to that particular place, time, and possibly the people you were with. For instance, some of you probably remember the summer of 1964 when the Supremes released "Where Did Our Love Go?" Or maybe you remember the turning of the decade in the summer of 1970 when Edwin Starr released "War." Or perhaps you were in college when Rick Springfield released his hit "Jesse's Girl" in the summer of 1981. The song that always takes me back is "MMMBop" by Hanson, released in the summer of 1997. I was only seven, but it started my discovery of music and bonding with my sister over our love for boy bands. Songs hold much power and memory and shape us and our lives. This summer, we will be celebrating the songs of our faith that have a lot of power for us and our congregation. What would be on your Top Ten Hymn List? Would it be "The Old Rugged Cross" because your father played that song every evening for Sunday supper? Would it be "Shine, Jesus, Shine" because you learned it at summer church camp with your lifelong friends? Whatever it is, we want to hear from you! At the welcome table, we will have a sign-up sheet starting Sunday, June 1st. Please tell us your name, song, and reason. You can also email the church office directly with the information. We will take requests until Sunday, June 29th. We will start using them as soon as we receive them. Maybe it will be sung as a congregational hymn or used as a special piece of music for the offertory. We may not be able to get in all the hits, but we will do our best through Sunday, August 31st. In addition, Pastor Chris and I will be using our favorite Scriptures throughout the summer here and there, sharing the passages that spoke to us at different times in our lives. On other Sundays, we will jump back into the lectionary. We look forward to what we and all of you will create for the summer services together!
