Luke 2.21-22, 24
After eight days had passed, it was time to circumcise the child; and he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord”), and offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.”
After his birth, Jesus is subjected to the word and will of God. As a male he is circumcised and officially given his name. As the eldest male he is dedicated to God through the presentation of an offering. A new calendar year brings about the opportunity for many new “births” and dedications in life. A new year provides the opportunity to re-present ourselves to God, to ourselves, and to others, to reaffirm the gift that each of us is from God.
