Become Engaged in Mission
First Covenant is engaged in numerous programs, projects, and missions on our campus and in our West Bayfront neighborhood with our community partners including Gannon University. Many of those programs and projects are profiled on the home page and throughout this website.Look for the title “Mission In Action.” To learn more about Community Engagement efforts and to volunteer at First Covenant, contact Seph Kumer, Director of Community Engagement at 814-456-4243 or [email protected].
Here is a look at our most recent community engagement projects so far during 2018:
Our partnership with the West Bayfront Neighborhood on National Night Out at Gridley Park broke attendance and collaboration records. A rainy day became a beautiful evening with over 1,000 people from the neighborhood attending. On this August evening, even more groups and businesses from the neighborhood came together to promote a safe, healthy community. A great team of workers from First Covenant and our friends ran the bounce houses, water balloon toss and potato sack races. Kids and their families enjoyed the evening. This annual event shows our involvement and commitment to our neighborhood. This annual community outreach event takes place on the first Tuesday of August.
Coming Together To Improve a School and a Neighborhood Center: ServErie and First Covenant joined forces in the beginning of August and partnered with Pfeiffer-Burleigh Elementary School and the Booker T. Washington Center for a school initiative project. Volunteers came together to help paint, clean, landscape, drywall, renovate, and repair and these two buildings in the West Bayfront Neighborhood. During the first week of August 2018, Seph Kumer, Greg Sesler, Ray and Lorie Fritts, joined many others from First Covenant to help make the necessary improvements to the two buildings.
Drive-in Night at the Movies: During the summer of 2018, First Covenant hosted two family movie nights in our parking lot. Refreshments and popcorn provided. The events in June and July offered another opportunity to reach out into the community and to welcome our neighbors for an evening of fun.
Erie City Missions’s Urban University at First Covenant: During June & July 2018, First Covenant served as host for the Erie City Mission’s
Urban University during two different sessions. Middle school students enrolled in culinary arts classes and signed-up for authoring/illustrating classes. The Erie City Mission has designed Urban University as a opportunity for inner city kids to explore possible vocations. They get to learn new skills and discover if this is area that they would like to explore as a potential career.
On A Mission To Do Lunch: Each month a combined team of FPCC folks and Gannon international students come together to prepare and serve lunch to 100 or more neighbors at the Erie City Mission on French Street in downtown Erie. Volunteers are always appreciated. First Covenant gathers a team and serves lunch on the first Thursday of the month. The next opportunity to serve on this volunteer team is Thursday,October 4.
